TMNT: Splintered Fate - Nintendo Switch launch assets

In short

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate is a success story. Since releasing on Apple Arcade in 2023, its action-packed roguelike gameplay has wowed players who have compared it favourably to genre heavyweights like Hades and Dead Cells, but with the bonus of slick four-player co-op. So, fans were over the moon when the news broke that the game would be heading to Nintendo Switch and Steam courtesy of developer and publisher Super Evil Megacorp. And when the SEMC team needed a range of videos to support this new release, they came to us. In this case study, we’ll take you behind the scenes of our video production work, explaining our design choices in detail and the processes we followed to ensure that Splintered Fate enjoyed a bodacious launch.

Social videos

To support the Switch release of Splintered Fate, the SEM team requested a suite of video ads to be used across social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram and Reddit.

With an eye on A/B testing, we got cracking on two versions of the video. Version one focused on the four turtles, their respective attributes and how their unique styles impacted gameplay. A perfect taster for those TMNT fans who have their favourite character. This version strongly highlighted the game’s co-op mode, a significant point of difference for a roguelike.

For version two, our attention turned to the game’s enemies and combat styles. Roguelikes are known for their challenging gameplay, so making the enemies front and centre made sense to appeal to genre fans.

Pizza the action

For both versions, we used quick cuts and stylish motion graphics to match Splintered Fate’s fast and furious gameplay and keep viewers engaged from start to finish.

Because the game was already available for other platforms, our videos needed to clearly show that this was new for Switch and not a showcase of the existing handheld version to avoid audience confusion. One version of our ads displayed a Nintendo-related CTA throughout its runtime to reinforce the message.

As with all of our video ad suites, we produced versions in multiple ratios to meet the requirements of the various social media platforms. We created 15 and 30-second versions and ensured they were localised for use in Germany and France.

Sizzling hot

We carefully optimised SEM’s full-length trailer, adding relevant subtitles and end slates so that it could run in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands, key markets for Splintered Fate.

Nintendo requested a 20-second gameplay video to use in their official sizzle reel compilation. Nintendo channels attract millions of viewers; our work needed to be on point.

Using decades of experience, we selected 20 seconds of gameplay footage that we felt portrayed the game in its strongest light and allowed it to stand out in a crowded compilation video.

Accolades

Finally, our attention turned to the production of an accolades trailer. Accolades trailers are an essential part of a game’s release plan. They highlight to the audience the positive response from critics and offer an opportunity to refresh video ad content.

We strategically placed Splintered Fate’s accolades at the beginning of our trailer to maximise engagement and ensure that they weren’t missed by viewers who may cut the video short.
