Kingdom Two Crowns: Call of Olympus - Announcement

In short

In our latest case study, we take a look at one of our favourite indie experiences of 2024: Call of Olympus, the most recent expansion for the utterly charming Kingdom Two Crowns. Published by our friends at Raw Fury, Call of Olympus moves the series away from the medieval-style setting of the main game and into a world inspired by ancient Greek mythology. Call of Olympus was released in early October. To support the wishlist phase of their marketing campaign, the Raw Fury team asked us to produce a suite of video ads to engage the audience and show off the game in its best light.

Greed is not good

The Kingdom titles are a series of strategy games set on a two-dimensional plane with players assuming control of a mounted monarch. By day, you collect gold, build defences and recruit villagers to expand your realm. But when night falls, terrifying monsters known as the Greed emerge from the shadows to steal your cash, kill your people and generally ruin your day. As each day passes, the game gets harder. New, tougher Greed swarm your kingdom, requiring you to upgrade your defences and unlock new artefacts and weapons to help turn the tide in your favour. Your challenge is to expand your territory without overextending your defences. Your ultimate quest is to reach the legendary Mount Olympus before dark forces consume it, and all is lost.

Short and sweet

The video ads' run times were limited to 15 and 6 seconds. Despite the short time, they needed to include plenty of information, including details surrounding the narrative, the day-night cycle and some of the new features the audience could expect to see.

We used quick cuts to create snappy, fast-paced videos that began by introducing viewers to the new setting with views of detailed Greek-inspired architecture and mountains dominating the landscape.

A sneak peek at one of the game’s power-ups gave way to a nighttime sequence showing a group of Greed making off with stolen gold and our heroic monarch in hot pursuit.

A flash of bright white rounds off the video, which concludes with an end slate featuring exquisite artwork and the all-important “Wishlist Now” CTA.

Pixel perfect

One of the signature features of the Kingdom games is the gorgeous pixel-based art style. Subtle effects and visual flourishes bring the world to life, with the player’s imagination filling in the remaining details.

Call of Olympus sees the game lean heavily into the ancient Greek aesthetic. Giant statues and columns loom over your land. Waterfalls cascade into the sea, which beautifully reflects the skies and heavily forested backgrounds.

We included footage demonstrating many of these eye-catching features, such as the player’s ship and its animated oars, your soldiers' playful animations and the graceful gallop of the pegasus mount.

Bad moon rising

One of our favourite effects occurs during “blood moon” events. Every few nights, the player is assaulted by an unusually large group of enemies, which can easily overwhelm an underprepared monarch.

These events are preceded by the rising of a blood-red moon, accompanied by sinister music and eerie effects that let the player know that big trouble is on the way.

Visual and audio effects combine to create a genuinely unsettling vibe that offsets the charming daytime sequences, which feature the comforting sight of wild rabbits and deer bounding around the landscape.

The juxtaposition between the two is a real treat, and recreating this cycle gave our videos a structure that would be instantly recognisable to fans of the series.
